In the sacred chambers of our Lodge, we are taught that the working tools of Masonry are not merely physical implements, but profound symbols designed to shape the intangible temple of our character. As we labor in the quarries of our daily lives, these symbolic tools offer us the means to build what might be called “Civilizations in Our Minds” – ordered, harmonious inner worlds that manifest outwardly as upright conduct.
The Architecture of Character
The Square teaches us rectitude of conduct – to deal squarely with our Brethren. When we apply this tool with precision to our thoughts and actions, we ensure that our dealings are fair, just, and true. A mind built upon the principle of the Square creates relationships characterized by honesty and equity.
The Level reminds us that we meet upon the level – that true worth is determined not by worldly rank or station, but by integrity of character. When we build our inner civilizations with this tool in hand, we cultivate humility and recognize the inherent dignity in every Brother, regardless of his circumstances.
The Plumb Line guides us to walk uprightly before God and man. In constructing our mental edifices, this tool ensures that our conduct remains aligned with the immutable principles of truth and moral rectitude.
From Thought to Action
Brothers, the civilizations we construct within our minds are not meant to remain abstract concepts. They must manifest through our deeds. As our ritual teaches, it is not enough to speak of virtue – we must practice it. It is insufficient to profess integrity – we must embody it.
When we properly utilize our Masonic tools, our words align with our actions. We do not merely promise fair dealing – we ensure it through conscientious effort. We do not simply profess brotherhood – we demonstrate it through consistent acts of kindness, relief, and truth.
The Test of True Brotherhood
The true test of how well we have built these inner civilizations comes when we are faced with difficult choices:
-
- When a Brother requires honest counsel, do we offer platitudes or speak with candor tempered by compassion?
- When our own interests conflict with fairness, do we compromise our principles or stand firm in rectitude?
- When no one is watching, do our actions reflect the same integrity we display in open Lodge?
The Ongoing Labor
The work of building civilizations in our minds is never complete. Each day presents new challenges to our principles, new opportunities to apply our tools, and new portions of rough ashlar requiring our attention.
As we gather in fellowship at North Hollywood Lodge No. 542, let us recommit ourselves to this noble labor. Let us be mindful of how we wield our symbolic tools, knowing that the quality of our inner architecture will determine how we stand as men and Masons in the world.
By properly utilizing these Masonic implements, we build not only better selves but contribute to a more harmonious society – one where fair dealing and truth prevail, and where brotherhood transcends mere words to become living reality.
May the Grand Architect of the Universe guide our hands as we work, and may the civilizations we build within our minds serve as beacons to all who seek Light.
